giersh rich familyThe Rev. Mark Avera, Vicar of Church of the Resurrection, North Charleston, recently announced that the Rev. Rich Giersch is joining their staff full-time.  An anonymous benefactor has offered to underwrite the position for one year. Both Avera and Giersch come from St. Michael's, Charleston, where Avera continues to serve on a part-time basis, devoting the majority of his time to Church of the Resurrection. Quoting Avera’s note to the parish, “In addition to being a gifted musician and worship leader, Rich also has strong gifts in evangelism and discipleship, outreach and mission.  In many ways, our gifts (his and mine) are complementary.  The offer, which was discussed with the Vestry and enthusiastically accepted, will enable us – God helping – to multiply our outreach efforts in a way that I could not have envisioned just three months ago.”

Please keep the clergy, lay leaders and the entire church family in your prayers, that God would, as Mark said, “multiply their outreach efforts” in the North Charleston area and beyond.

The message sent to the congregation from Mark Avera is below:

Welcome Giersch Family!!!

It is with thanksgiving and no small sense of wonder that I write to inform you of an amazing opportunity that has been given to us at Church of the Resurrection.  An anonymous benefactor has offered to underwrite a full-time position for Rich Giersch to serve at our church for the coming year. Rich is an ordained priest of the diocese that I have had the privilege of knowing and serving alongside for nearly three years.  In addition to being a gifted musician and worship leader, Rich also has strong gifts in evangelism and discipleship, outreach and mission.  In many ways, our gifts (his and mine) are complementary.  The offer, which was discussed with the Vestry and enthusiastically accepted, will enable us – God helping – to multiply our outreach efforts in a way that I could not have envisioned just three months ago.

Rich officially begins at Resurrection this week, on June 1.  A brief bio and family picture follow.  Please join me in welcoming Rich, Holly, Oliver and Griffin to our church family.

Rich and Holly Giersch presently reside in Mt Pleasant, where Rich has served in various ministry roles over the past 25 years.  Born in Savannah, Georgia, and raised in Charlotte, NC, Rich first felt called to Christian ministry in ninth grade.  Since 1988, he has served in Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist, Non-denominational, and (of course) Anglican churches.  Ordained to the priesthood in January of 2013, Rich is now using his life experiences and gifts to encourage others in their Christian faith and inspire them to the greater things of Christ. Preacher, worship leader (music), missionary, evangelist, Rich can be likened to a utility player in baseball.  He can play many different positions on the field (in the Church) well but is rarely pegged for just one thing.  Rich and Holly have two sons.  Griffin (24), who is studying film at UNC School of the Arts, and Oliver (7), who is presently working on his doctorate in The Study of Legos and Super Heroes.
