Safeguarding God's Children

children in a collageDear Clergy, Wardens and Staff,

There is no question what a precious treasure our children are. As leaders in the Diocese of South Carolina, we have a moral, spiritual and canonical obligation to exercise due diligence in assuring that their faith formation happens in a safe environment. History teaches us clearly that this is not an outcome we can take for granted. There are steps we can and must take to assure the joy of their Christian Faith is not stolen from those in our care.

It is with that purpose in mind that the Diocese offers the “Safeguarding God’s Children” workshops across the Diocese. The workshops continue to be led by Mrs. Polly Sosnowski, whose years of service as a licensed clinical social worker in South Carolina make her a marvelous resource for this training. The training provided will cover the necessary material to fulfill both diocesan canons and local parish guidelines. The next workshops offered are:

If you have anyone in your parish who works regularly with children or youth, they must have this training. If you would be interested in being the host for such a workshop yourself, that would be blessing to your own parish as well as others nearby. On-line training is also a viable option for some parishes. Call and we can discuss what would work best for you, but do make sure your staff and volunteers are appropriately trained.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation in helping make the Diocese of South Carolina a safe place for all our children.

Join us for a taste....an awakening to what it means to be an oriented man. An oriented man is a man who knows who he is, where he is, and the good God is up to in his life. Based on themes from the best selling book, The Heart of a Warrior by Michael Thompson, Scott Jennings will share an invitation and encouragement on becoming more.

3:30 to 4:45 p.m.: The Heart of a Woman:  Every woman longs to be seen, wanted, and known. They bear the image of God in a most beautiful and significant way. Join Sherry Jennings as she guides you into a deeper understanding of the core desires of a woman's heart. This may very well change everything.

Mentoring:  Are you being called to be a spiritual father?

Jay Crouse, Radical Mentoring and Coordinator for Men’s Ministry
Ramsey Gilchrist, Founder of M2 Ministry
This workshop is offered at 2 p.m. or  3:30 p.m.

The command of Jesus to go and make disciples is not in the least bit vague or ambiguous, but the Church, as Dallas Willard reminds us has opted to make converts instead of disciples.  Join us on Friday afternoon and check out two outstanding mentoring programs that will empower you to realize the command of Jesus to go and make disciples.

Prayer Changes Things

The Rev. Rob Kunes, Chaplain, St. Christopher Camp and Conference Center
This workshop is offered at 2 p.m. or 3:30 p.m.

In Ephesians Ch. 6 we see that we are all called to engage in some degree of spiritual warfare, and many of us feel unequipped for the battle.  Come and learn how to pray for healing, and how to declare blessings that will be life changing for you and your family.

Celebrate Recovery

Tom Brown
This workshop is offered at 2 p.m. or 3:30 p.m.

Recovery is not just for AA anymore!  Celebrate Recovery is a Christ-centered 12 Step program.  What we all have in common is our brokenness, the underlying problem and our attempt to self medicate the pain.  Learn how this program can become a vital ministry in your church.

Epic 2017

Epic 2017 Poster

EPIC
March 24-46, 2017

Epic is an interactive weekend for high school students that centers on the Bible, with creative worship and contemplation to stir the souls and renew the minds of students.

Our speaker is Korey Kincaid from St Paul's, Summerville. He will be taking us through 1 Kings 17-18 with a look at the prophet Elijah. Elijah truly exemplified heroic faith and Christ-like humility in the face of a darkened culture. We will read and think about how God used this man, pray that God would use us, so that we can live faithfully in the face of our own darkened culture.

Worship Music will be led by The Rev. Patrick Schlabs from the Cathedral. A gifted worship leader, Patrick is also part of Holy City Hymns - a liturgical music collective based in Charleston.

The weekend features small group Bible studies led by youth commission and some contemplative reflection time for students.  Both of these have been highlights of the weekend in the past. Epic is the most intimate of our events, intentionally smaller for greater personal interaction and impact.

The last day to register will be Monday March 13th.  The cost is $125.

Registration is handled through youth groups. A video of last year’s slideshow can be found at http://www.scyouth.org/events/epic.

If you have questions contact Diocesan Coordinator of Youth Ministry, Dave Wright.

Clergy Renewal of Vows

Clergy Renewal of Vows

Clergy Renewal of Vows, Thursday, April 6

The clergy of the Diocese will renew their vows on Thursday, April 6 at 11 a.m. at the Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul.

Clergy are to wear white stoles.

A Note to laity:  Though the service is primarily for the clergy, it is open to the public and the laity are encouraged to attend.  If you’re able, join us at the service. It’s a time to not only come alongside, pray for and encourage our clergy in their callings, but also a time to renew our own commitment to love, follow and serve Christ. Consider it part of your Lenten observance.  It’s a perfect lead-in to Holy Week.

Clergy are invited to bring labeled bottles of oil for both Chrism and Unction for the blessing at the conclusion of the service. There will also be additional bottles, available after the conclusion of the service, for those who are unable or forget to bring their own. Box lunches are available for those clergy who reserve them. (Note: Though the service is open to all, the lunch is for clergy only).

Barring good cause and due notification of the bishop, all clergy are expected to attend this service.

Clergy are to RSVP to Sara Ortiz at office@dioceseofsc.org.
