Denmark, S.C. -- Voorhees College will be hosting its second annual President's Scholarship Gala and Awards Ceremony commemorating the 114th founding of the institution on Saturday, April 9 at the Charleston Place Hotel beginning at 6:30 p.m.

All proceeds from the gala will be used toward scholarship money for deserving students to attend Voorhees College. During the ceremony, the institution will award Trustee Ralph W. Voorhees with the 2011 Keeper of the Flame Award for continuing his family's legacy of supporting Voorhees College. Voorhees became a member of the Voorhees College Board of Trustees in 2007. Trustee Voorhees' family legacy began in 1902 when his great grandfather Ralph Voorhees provided Voorhees' founder, Elizabeth Evelyn Wright-Menafee, with $5,000 to buy the land and build the first campus building.

Since 1902, the Voorhees family has continued its dedication and support to Voorhees. "We are extremely grateful for the generosity the Voorhees family has provided this institution for more than 100 years," said President Sellers. "We invite all of our supporters to join us at this year's gala and help us show our appreciation to Ralph Voorhees for him and his family's support of education."
An outstanding community leader, Trustee Voorhees was the senior vice president of the stockbrokerage firm, Paine Webber, Inc., in Edison, N.J., and a lifelong resident of Highland Park, N.J.  His community activities span health, urban renewal, cultural, and education.

Voorhees followed a family tradition in attending Rutgers University graduating in 1948.  He was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honorary society and played football, basketball and baseball.  His grandfather, the Rev. Dr. Oscar M. Voorhees, was an 1888 graduate, and his father, Ralph Whittaker Voorhees Sr., graduated from Rutgers in 1916.He is a member of the Rutgers Hall of Distinguished Alumni and holds a Presidential Recognition Award and the Loyal Son of Rutgers Award.

The entertainment for this year's gala will be "A Touch of Class," which is a Charleston show band with a variety of music styles including Motown, R&B and Beach.

Family Ministry Retreat

Family Ministry Retreat BrochureOnce again St. Christopher is partnering with the Diocese of South Carolina’s Department of Christian Faith Formation  to offer a time of fun, fellowship and ministry for the whole family through our annual Family Ministry Retreat. The Retreat will be held at St. Christopher Camp and Conference Center July 1-5. Our theme this year is Age to Age and Heart to Heart.

Download the brochure.

From age to age and heart to heart, the message of hope has been passed down to us through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Many of us have been awakened to the privilege and responsibility we have as parents to share this message with our families and children. However, the fact is, many of us are not quite sure how to do it. There are many strong Christian parents who have never shared their faith or testimony with their children. Many do not pray or read scripture together with their children and feel ill-equipped to teach their children about faith in Christ.

Did you know?
The percentage of Americans who claim to be Christians and can articulate the basic Gospel message:
Born before 1946: 65%
Born between 1946 and 1964: 35%
Born between 1965 and 1976: 15%
Born between 1976 and 1994: 4%
The Southern Baptist Council on Family Life

Age to Age and Heart to Heart is designed to help. This retreat will provide you with opportunities to meet together as a family among families for times of Intergenerational Worship as we revisit the basic truths of the Gospel through fun interactive lessons. We will learn how be intentional about the spiritual growth of our children from several  different families and how to to do this with younger children as well as with teens.

Come and be encouraged and connect with other parents committed to developing faith in the home. There will be great times of fellowship on the beach, loads of fun activities like kayaking and sailing, camp fires and singing as well as fantastic food.

This retreat is also an excellent place to recommend to families who through baptismal and confirmation preparation, have been awakened to the call of being intentional in shaping the hearts of their children for the Lord. Imagine all the fun of a vacation at the beach coupled with times of teaching and equipping the family for ministry.

For more information or to download a registration form, go to and click on Upcoming Events and then Family Ministry Retreat or call Elizabeth Bumpas at (843) 768-0429.
