New Wineskins: Mission Conference 2016 Not to be missed

\n
By the Rev. Bob Lawrence\, Chair\, Anglican Communion Developmen t Committee

If you are at all interested in raising a visi on for world mission in your church\, in networking with others involved i n world mission\, in learning more about mission to unreached people group s and in prayer and care for Anglican missionaries\, then a great opportun ity awaits you.

If you believe in the vision of the Diocese of South Carolina\, or making Biblical Anglicans for a Global Age\, and you want to find ways to do so globally with and among other Anglicans\, then you do not want to miss being a participant in the single largest gatherin g of mission minded Anglicans worldwide.  \;

Scheduled for April 7-10\, 2016 at Ridgecrest\, North Carolina\, the New Wineskins for G lobal Mission Conference will offer all of this and more to an expected 10 00 participants from throughout the world.

The Diocese of South Carolina traditionally has a large contingent of participants. \; Dur ing the last conference of 2013\, there were close to 75 registered partic ipants from the diocese\, including the entire vestry from at least one pa rish. \; The members of the diocesan Anglican Communion Development Co mmittee are also regular participants along with Bishop Mark Lawrence\, Bi shop Bill Skilton and many others. \; This involvement has blessed us mightily through the years providing an opportunity to both establish and nourish relationships throughout the whole of the Anglican Communion. &nbs p\;

In the week following the New Wineskins conference of 2013\ , many will remember that we were privileged to host numerous participatin g bishops here in the Diocese. \; Their presence among us was particul arly providential and encouraging due to their unrivaled public support of Bishop Mark Lawrence and the Diocese of South Carolina for the positions taken in support of orthodox Christianity within an Anglican expression of Christian \; faith.

Those relationships have also continue d to nourish mutual ministry throughout the Diocese.  \;

Bi shop Rob Martin of Marsabit\, Kenya has an ongoing relationship with both Christ Church\, Mt. Pleasant and St. Paul’s\, Summerville. \; Members of these parishes have visited Marsabit\, Kenya and welcomed visitors from Kenya to share in a mutual ministry. \; Bishop Rob has recently reque sted our support in providing leadership enhancing opportunities for his s oon-to-be-elected successor. \; These opportunities all stemmed from a New Wineskins connection.

Bishop Abraham Yel Nhial who first c ame to the attention of the Diocese through New Wineskins has returned on multiple occasions since 2013. \; He was welcomed by St. Michael’s Chu rch as a speaker at their annual Global Impact Celebration in 2014. \; He has ongoing relationships of support from numerous parishes throughout the diocese\, including Trinity\, Edisto\, and St. Paul’s\, Conway\, who remember him and the people of South Sudan regularly in their prayers.&nbs p\; He recently welcomed the first visitors from South Carolina to South S udan to share in his ministry there. \; He is also responsible for ope ning the doors for local Charleston Southern University student Kuaniyal ( KC) Chol to join the staff of St. Christopher Camp &\; Conference Cente r and to prepare for an internship back in his home country of South Sudan . \; Again\, these are mission relationships that were fostered throug h a New Wineskins connection.

What doors might your participati on in New Wineskins open for you and your church? \; With an amazing l ineup of keynote speakers including Archbishop Tito Zavala\, Bishop Grant LeMarquand and his wife Dr. Wendy LeMarquand\, and Bishop Ken Clarke\, all of whom are already regular visitors and supporters of South Carolina\, w hat indeed might God have in store? \; I know that it is an event I wi ll not miss. \; With spirited worship\, inspiring speakers\, ample wor kshop choices\, lively fellowship and the unfettered joy of Jesus among hu ndreds of mission minded Christians\, it is an experience I welcome sharin g with all. \; \; Plan to come as you will not regret it. \; R egistration is open now at www.newwineskins.org. \; Don’t delay. \ ;

St. Alban’s Chapel\, The Citadel\, to Celebrate 75th Annive rsary\, April 15

\n
On April 15\, St. Alban’s Chapel at The Citad el will hold its 75th Anniversary celebration. St. Alban’s Chapel reaches Citadel cadets with the gospel and trains them to go out into the world as transformative disciples of Christ. It is a ministry of The Diocese\, Chu rch of The Holy Cross\, Citadel alumni and friends. As we commemorate over 75 years of ministry\, we will honor the past\, celebrate the present and anticipate the future growth of ministry.
 \; \;  \;
This Anniversary Celebration will feature a dinner with Bishop FitzSimo ns Allison as the Guest of Honor\, with other Special Guests to include Ge n. John Grinalds\, former president of The Citadel. Bishop Allison will he lp us remember the past through a brief presentation on the remarkable lif e of Dr. William Porcher DuBose\, Citadel Class of 1855. Dean DuBose had a transformative encounter with Christ at The Citadel that changed the traj ectory of his life. Following graduation and the War Between the States he eventually became the Dean of the School of Theology at the University of the South at Sewanee. \; There he mentored two generations of clergy from all over the South. Most historians regard Dean DuBose as the most si gnificant voice to emerge from the Episcopal Church\, and he is believed t o be the only Citadel graduate and South Carolinian who has a feast day (1 8 August) in the calendar of the Episcopal and Anglican Churches in Americ a.

Most of the evening will celebrate the current ministry of t he St. Alban’s Chapel Society and Student Vestry. One current student rece ntly shared:

The Saint Albans Vestry has also been a huge help to me. Even though we are supposed to be teachers to knobs\, I have learne d more about God in the past year than I have in my whole life. Saint Alba ns to me is the clearest picture of what I think Jesus wanted the Church t o become. It is kind\, it is loving and above all\, it is faithful to its mission. I was initially a skeptic. Now every week I receive the undiluted word of God and only find myself wanting more. I read The Bible. I pray. I help others come to their own faith in the Lord. \; \; Where els e can you find testimonies of this and other 18-22 college students who ar e coming to Christ and being discipled in their faith? This is to be celeb rated!  \;

Looking forward in ministry will include the unv eiling of new ministry opportunities at The Citadel and beyond. \; Exc iting advances in technology\, understanding of deeper discipleship method s\, and outreach to campuses around the state will be shared and cast as a vision for the future.

This event is sponsored by the St. Alb an’s Society Board and chaired by Myron and Ann Harrington of Charleston.& nbsp\; It will be held at The Carolina Yacht Club\, E Bay Street\, Charles ton. \; To register or host a table\, contact Anna Smith\, event coord inator\, at anna@STACitadel.org.  \; You can find out more and register on our website www.stacitadel.o rg
