September 16, 2006 – Bishop Lawrence elected 14th Bishop of South Carolina

March 2007 - Consent process (for Lawrence election from House of Bishop) ruled null and void on a technicality

April- May 2007 – Bishop Lawrence asked to stand again in election for Bishop of South Carolina

August 4, 2007 – Bishop Lawrence re-elected. During consent process Province IV Bishops send questionnaire. Two questions led to controversies…1) “What would you do to keep the Diocese of SC in TEC” and 2) “Would KJS be consecrating you?”

November 2007 – Consent received.

March 2008
– Bishop J.D. Schofield (Diocese of San Joaquin) deposed

September 2008 – Bishop Robert Duncan (Diocese of Pittsburgh) deposed

July 2009 – General Convention: Two Resolutions pass:  Generous Pastoral Response contrary to Book of Common Prayer (BCP) and Constitution and Canons.  Work on rites for Same-Sex Marriage/Blessings,  (Title IV revisions and Mandated National Church Health Care Program)

January 26, 2010 – Attorney representing the Episcopal Church begins investigating the actions of parishes and the Diocese who modified their corporate documents to remove all references to TEC. Read more.

March 26, 2010
– Diocese holds Annual Convention--demands for the Presiding Bishop to remove her attorney.

March 28, 2010 – St Andrew’s, Mt Pleasant departs The Episcopal Church (TEC) and Diocese of South Carolina

September 22, 2010 – The Episcopal Forum of SC submitted charges to the Bishops and to Executive Council of TEC --8 of the 12 charges mentioned in the allegations were brought up in this document.

October 15, 2010 – Reconvened Convention passed preventative/protective.

2011 – First investigation by a Disciplinary Board for Bishop's announced

March 2011 – House of Bishops (HOB) meeting where the  Presiding Bishop refers to SC as the “Elephant in the Room”

July 1, 2011 – Title IV Canons become effective.


November 1, 2011 – The Board of Directors and Standing Committee unanimously vote to call a Special Convention the first Saturday that is 30 days after any “action” of The Episcopal Church (“TEC”) against Bishop Lawrence.

November 22, 2011 –   First Disciplinary Board for Bishops finds it cannot certify abandonment.

July 11, 2012 – SC Delegation Differentiates itself from actions of the 77th General Convention. Read more.

July 11, 2012 – Lawrence addresses House of Bishops regarding actions of General Convention. Asks for time/space. Read more.

Late August 2012 – Lawrence meets with the Diocese of South Carolina Standing Committee. They unanimously agree to allow him to seek to negotiate with the Presiding Bishop for a peaceful way forward. Standing.

September 18, 2012 – Disciplinary Board for Bishops meets and certifies abandonment on three charges, two of which were previously dismissed on November 22, 2011.   Bishop Lawrence, the Standing Committee and the Diocese are not told.

October 2, 2012 – The Standing Committee resolves to disassociate from The Episcopal Church if any "action" is taken against Bishop Lawrence.

October 3, 2012 – Presiding Bishop meets with Bishops Andrew Waldo (from the Upper Diocese of South Carolina) and Lawrence. Presiding Bishop  agrees that  “creative solutions” are desirable to avoid total war. Presiding Bishop focuses on how long
Bishop Lawrence plans to remain Bishop of the Diocese. Next meeting is set for October 11, 2012. (That meeting must be postponed to October 22, 2012 due to a funeral).

October 15, 2012 – The Presiding Bishop informs Bishop Lawrence of the action of the Disciplinary Board decision on Sept. 18 to certify abandonment of communion. Read more.

October 17, 2012 – Diocese announces that it automatically disassociated when The Episcopal Church took action against the Bishop. 

November 7, 2012 – Steering Committee of the new TEC affiliate group sends out misleading email claiming to be the Diocese of South Carolina, inviting clergy to a “Diocesan” gathering.   Location changed after original hosting rector learned the nature of the meeting.  Unauthorized use of name, seal, intent to mislead.  Read more.

November 17, 2012 – Diocesan Convention affirms Disaffiliation. Read more.

December 5, 2012 – Presiding Bishop claims that Bishop Lawrence has renounced his ministry. Read more.

December 10, 2012 – New TEC Steering Committee announces Convention; continues to mislead people by using Diocesan Seal, name, etc.  Read more.

December 13, 2012 – The Presiding Bishop announces, using Diocesan name, that she is calling a convention of the Diocese for January 2013.   The Constitution and Canons of TEC and the Diocese do not allow her to do so.

January 4, 2013 – The Diocese of South Carolina the trustees and congregations representing the vast majority of its baptized members files a lawsuit against The Episcopal Church to protect the Diocese's real and personal property and that of its parishes. Read more.

January 15, 2013 – Another 15 parishes join the Diocesan suit to block The Episcopal Church from seizing local property. Read more

January 23, 2013 – Circuit Court blocks the use of the Diocese of South Carolina identity by anyone outside the Diocese. Read more

January 31, 2013 – The Episcopal Church agrees to injunction that prohibits them from using Diocese of South Carolina identity. Read more.

February 28, 2013 – Three more parishes join the Diocese of South Carolina suit to prevent the Episcopal Church from seizing property. Read more.

March 13, 2013 – TEC lawsuit asks Federal Judge to overturn state court order and strip Diocese of South Carolina of its Identity. Read more.

June 3, 2013 – TEC Holds hostage Pensions of More than 80 disassociated staff members; refuses to allow them to move their retirement savings. Read more.

June 10, 2013 – Federal Judge remands Diocese of South Carolina Case to State Court. Read more.

August 21, 2013 – Federal Judge Dismisses Case Against Bishop Lawrence. Read more.

October 3, 2013 – Judge Denies TEC Request to Expand Lawsuit. Read more.

October 11, 2013 – SC Judge Rejects TEC's Request to Remove Injunction Protecting Diocesan Names and Seal. Read more.

December 30, 2013 –  For the Second Time, Court Rejects TEC's Effort to Expand Lawsuit. Read more.

February 6, 2014 – The Diocese asks State Supreme Court to end TEC stalling tactics by hearing appeal. Read more.

March 18, 2014 – SC Court of Appeals Denies TEC Appeal. Blocks TEC's Stalling Tactics. Read more.

May 7, 2014 – SC Supreme Court Rejects TEC appeal. Justices' Decision Clears the Way for Trial to Protect Local Assets from Takeover. Read more.

July 3, 2014 –SC Circuit Court Judge orders TEC to complete 34 depositions in one day; Trial to Begin July 8. Read more.
