Longtime Secretary to the Bishops, Vangie Summers Dies PDF Print E-mail
Vangie SummersPlease keep the family of Evangeline "Vangie" Summers in your prayers. Vangie, the widow of the Rev. Dewey Johnson Summers, Sr. died on Saturday June 15. Vangie began working in the Diocesan Office August 1, 1969 and retired on June 30, 1994. She served as the secretary to Bishops Temple, Allison and Salmon. Her funeral service will be held on Friday, June 21 at Old Saint Andrew's, Charleston at 11 a.m. Read the obituary.
 
Federal Judge Remands Diocese of SC Case to State Court PDF Print E-mail

Court finds that “tacit” First Amendment issues not in the Diocese’s complaint are not a basis for federal court jurisdiction


U.S. District Judge C. Weston Houck today remanded the case to the South Carolina Circuit Court.  In informing the parties, Judge Houck said,

“If this Court determined that a case may be removed based on federal question jurisdiction whenever a defendant attributed a federal constitutional issue not alleged or advanced in a well-pleaded complaint, federal question jurisdiction could potentially be expanded to all cases containing tacit First Amendment issues.”

Episcopal Pension Organization ignores rollover requests as it plans a special workshop for clergy of remnant group

CHARLESTON, SC, June 3, 2013 – The retirement savings of more than 80 non-clergy employees of the Diocese of South Carolina and its parishes are being held hostage by their former pension plan at the Episcopal Church (TEC).

The lay employees have been trying to arrange for the rollover of their retirement savings since February, when they first contacted the Church Pension Group, which provides retirement, health and other benefits to employees of The Episcopal Church, its parishes, dioceses and other institutions. The employees became eligible to rollover their funds into another qualified plan when their employer, the Diocese or the parishes that voted to disassociate from the denomination, officially ceased to be employed by any TEC organization or parish.

St. Christopher SundayNo matter where you find yourself in the Diocese of SC, you can join in the celebration of St. Christopher’s 75 Anniversary. St. Christopher Sunday celebrations will be observed in worship at Parishes throughout the Diocese. Teams in each parish will coordinate these local events. Find that “vintage camp -T-shirt” and if it fits -wear it. A St. Christopher Sunday Eucharist will also be held in the Kimbel Chapel for those staying the weekend and anyone who would like to attend.
