The Diocesan medical mission to the Dominican Republic will be held October 27 through November 5. The team will visit two clinic sites on the outskirts of San Pedro de Macoris, which is east of Santo Domingo. Angelina and Santa Fe are rural communities that sprang up around sugar cane refineries which are now closed. Some residents are of Haitian descent, and many are living in sparse dwellings without electricity or running water. Medical team leaders are Dr. Howard Holl and Joy Holl.
The team is looking for two more physicians, two nurses, a dentist, a pharmacist and pharmacy assistants, a clergy member/spiritual leader, and interpreters fluent in Spanish. Estimated cost per person is $1100-$1200 per person, depending on airfare.
Contributions for this mission are tax-deductible and checks can be made to the Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul, and designated for the Diocesan Medical Mission.
A barbecue/silent auction will be held at the Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul on Sunday, October 16, to raise funds for Dominican missions.
The first organizational meeting will be held on Sunday, July 10 at 3 p.m. at the Cathedral. For more information, contact Joy Holl at
