The aim of the Diocesan Staff is to support the parishes, missions and ministries of the diocese to fulfill the work to which they are called.
Diocesan Administrator/Assistant Treasurer
Nancy is the Diocesan Administrator and Assistant Treasurer, responsible for the finances of the diocese, St. Christopher Camp and Conference Center, and the Trustees. She works with parish administrators and clergy on a variety of administrative matters, and enjoys making presentations to treasurers, parish administrators, and vestry members on managing the temporal affairs of the church. She is married, lives in Summerville with her husband. They have one son, a daughter-in-law and two granddaughters. She has been with the diocese since 1993.
Human Resource Manager/Finance Assistant
As the Diocesan Human Resource Manager Susan handles all personnel, payroll, insurance, and 403b retirement issues. She processes payroll for 41 churches. She handles the insurance and 403b retirement program enrollment and data updates for active clergy, eligible laity and their families. Susan also tracks and submits all 403b contributions. As the finance assistant she handles the insurance billing, laity background checks, posts deposits for the camp and all events, and reconciles all Diocesan bank cards. She also serves on two committees, the Benefits Committee and the Finance Committee as both a staff member and secretary. Susan is an active member of All Saints, Florence, where her husband, the Rev. Karl Burns, is the Rector. They have two daughters and three grandchildren.
Coordinator for Men's Ministry
Bishop Mark Lawrence has welcomed Jay Crouse to the Diocese of S. Carolina to serve as his Coordinator for Men’s Ministry in partnership with Peter Rothermel, Coordinator of Christian Faith Formation. Jay has been actively involved and a leader in men’s ministry for the past 30 years and was first called to full time lay ministry in the Diocese of SW Florida in 1999 by then Bishop John Lipscomb. In 2013, Jay published his first book on men’s ministry, Men and the Church, which provides the vision, framework and best practices for our local churches to thrive in developing and sustaining a men’s ministry. He is readily available to assist our church leaders in all aspects of men’s ministry. Jay and Laura have been married for 36 years, have four adult sons, an adult daughter, two beautiful daughter-in-law’s and are awaiting their first grandchild (finally) in July 2016.
Director of Communications
As Director of Communications Joy serves as the editor of the Jubilate Deo, the diocesan newspaper which is mailed to approximately 12,500 households. She serves as the webmaster, keeping the Diocesan website up-to-date and produces the bi-weekly e-newsletter that is sent to over 2,800 addresses. Joy also serves as a resource person to churches who request assistance in the area of communications. She has worked for the Diocese since 2006. Joy and her husband, Marion, live in Summerville and are members of St. Paul's, Summerville. They have two sons, Samuel who is a Youth Minister at St. Andrew's, Mt. Pleasant, and Andrew, who attends Clemson University.
Canon to the Ordinary
The Canon to the Ordinary works at the direction of the Diocesan Bishop (The Ordinary). Primary areas of responsibility include the ordination process, clergy deployment, clergy compensation and new clergy Orientation. The Canon assists in other areas as needed, including the work of the Standing Committee, Finance Committee, Trustees and the Diocesan Benefits Committee. Jim and his wife, Libby, live in Mt. Pleasant with their three children, Mary, Will and Anna Li. Team Lewis is involved in swimming, tennis, piano and cycling. Jim has been a priest of the Diocese since 1994 and the family attends Christ Church in Mt. Pleasant.
As the Diocesan Receptionist, Saralyn Ortiz greets guests to the Diocesan House, answers the phones, and is responsible for updating accounting data, the Diocesan database and overseeing the Resource Library. "I consider myself an assistant to the entire staff, " says Sara, "and I help whenever I'm needed." Sara joined the staff in February 2015. She has a degree in Electronic Media/Broadcasting and Spanish from Appalachian State University. In her spare time, she performs at The Black Fedora Comedy Mystery Theatre on Church Street.
Coordinator of Christian Faith Formation
The vision of the Diocese's Christian Faith Formation Deipartment is to restore relationships to biblical order through the transforming power of Jesus Christ. As Coordinator for Christian Faith Formation Peter Rothermel works with parish leaders both clergy and laity to develop relationships, provide resources, and offer events which assist in making disciples, equipping saints for ministry and building up the body of Christ for the work of the Gospel. Peter and his wife Jackie live on James Island with their children Breezy and Peter.They attend Saint James Church.
Assistant to the Bishop/Event Coordinator
Beth Snyder is the Assistant to the Bishop and the Coordinator of Events for the Diocesan Office. She is responsible for administrative details of the Bishop’s office as well as the coordination of diocesan convention, clergy retreats and functions, and youth retreats. Beth is married to The Rev. Dr. Greg Snyder, Rector of St. John’s Parish on John’s Island. They have two young adult daughters and a son-in-law who can fix anything. When not in the office, Beth is likely cutting the crusts off of her pimento cheese sandwiches or journaling in her ESV Bible.
Coordinator for Youth Ministry
As Coordinator for Youth Ministry Dave is a vision keeper. His work revolves around assisting, training, mentoring, and providing pastoral care to youth ministers and leaders. Dave consults with churches seeking to develop youth ministries or hire new youth ministers. He also oversees Diocesan youth events and represents the interests of young people on various boards and committees in the diocese. Dave is married to Jane, a middle school teacher in Summerville. They have three young adult children and worship at the Cathedral Church of St. Luke and St. Paul.
