Early in 2009, Bishop Lawrence called for the creation of the Anglican Communion Development Committee to replace the World Mission Committee (WMC). The intention was to create a committee that would serve to reflect the changing environment of the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion in this global age and to reflect the vision that Bishop Lawrence believes we as the Diocese of South Carolina are called to fulfill - “To help shape the future of Anglicanism in the 21st Century through mutually enriching missional relationships with dioceses and provinces of the Anglican Communion (Romans 1:11-12; 2 Corinthians 9:1-15), and through modeling a responsible autonomy and inter-provincial accountability (Philippians 2:1-5; Ephesians 4:1-6) for the sake of Jesus Christ, his Kingdom and his Church.”

The Rev. Dr. Kendall Harmon was appointed as the Anglican Communion Development Director, and a committee has been formed over the past six months comprised of both clergy and lay representatives from each of the deaneries.  The clergy representatives were appointed by Bishop Lawrence, and the lay representatives were selected from those nominated from within their deaneries by the clergy representatives and the Deans.  The present membership with their deanery identified includes the following: The Rev. Dr. Kendall Harmon (ACD Coordinator), The Rev. Robert Lawrence (Chair, Charleston), Mrs. Leslie Burton (Charleston), The Rev. Michael Clarkson (West Charleston), Mrs. Cindy Pennington (West Charleston), The Rev. Chris Royer (Beaufort), Ms. Sarah Tillman (Beaufort), The Rev. Paul Fuener (Georgetown), Mrs. Sue Harrison (Georgetown), The Rev. Michael Hub (Orangeburg), Mr. DuValle Elliot (Orangeburg), The Rev. Charlie Walton (Florence), Mr. Sam Dargan (Florence), and The Very Reverend William McKeachie (Clergy at-large). The ACD Committee has now met several times since its initial formation and has begun to make recommendations for the kinds of strategic partnerships for mutually enriching relationships throughout the Anglican Communion and beyond.

One of the early tasks of the ACD Committee was to try to compile information from every parish in the diocese to provide a view of what the diocese as a whole is doing now. The committee specifically wanted to identify those parishes that (1) supported a missionary; (2) sponsored a missionary sent from their parish; (3) sponsored parish participation in short-term missions; (4) and had existing missional relationships in other areas of the Anglican Communion. While this data collecting is not yet complete, the ACD Committee found that many parishes include some funds for support of a missionary. In most cases, these are folks that come from outside the diocese but are supported by many churches through their sending missionary agencies such as SAMS (South American Missionary Society), Global Teams, or Anglican Frontier Missions. Some parishes have actually raised up parishioners and sponsored them to enter full-time missionary ministry. Many parishes throughout the diocese have either sponsored short-term mission trips or supported their parishioners in participating in them. Missions in the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Honduras are the most common, but an increasing number of churches have responded to mission opportunities in African countries including, but certainly not limited to Liberia, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya. Collecting and sharing this information will allow the ACD Committee to identify those existing missional relationships that can be nourished and strengthened by greater cooperation and participation from throughout the diocese. It also allows the committee to identify those areas of opportunity for strategic partnerships.

A recent visit to the diocese by The Most Rev. Dr. Mouneer Anis, Bishop of Egypt, and Archbishop of the Anglican Province of Jerusalem and the Middle East resulted in a partnership and new companion relationship between South Carolina and this province of the Anglican Communion. Additionally, because Archbishop Anis’ province is already in partnership with the Province of South East Asia, by extension, the door has opened wide for further exploration and relationship -building there as well. While the ACD Committee will support and facilitate both existing missional relationships, and many of these exciting new initiatives, it will remain parish-based missions and relationships that yield the fruit of building up God’s Kingdom.

While many often read about mission trips and missionary tales in the pages of the Jubilate Deo, early in 2010, the ACD Committee hopes to have information available through the diocesan website to share more fully share the news of what is planned regarding missions and missional relationship, as well as what has been accomplished throughout the Diocese in this regard. These are exciting times and all can find opportunities to be involved as we seek to follow Christ and help shape the future of Anglicanism in the 21st century.
