The Diocese of South Carolina is hosting a series of six workshops at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church at 405 King Street in Charleston on Friday, March 13 from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Open to the public, the workshops will focus on Christian marriage, evangelism, missions, catechism (or teaching the faith), youth ministry and Anglicanism and issues of affiliation.
The Rev. Dr. Stephen Noll, a retired professor at Trinity School for Ministry, teaching on “Cultural Shifts in Marriage: What is Christian Marriage?” will review the basics of the Church’s traditional teaching on marriage and compare it with the “ethic of intimacy” that prevails in contemporary Western society.
Langdon Stewart, an Australian currently working for Church of Our Saviour, Johns Island, comes with years of experience leading evangelism workshops around the world for Evangelism Explosion. He is teaching, “Sharing the Gospel.”
Sharon Steinmiller, director of the New Wineskins Missionary Network, who has spoken around the country on missions, will lead “Hands-On Mission Locally and Globally.” Sharon will offer practical how-to’s and encouragement in how participants can “get on board with what God is doing locally and around the world.”
Former Dean/President of Trinity Seminary in Ambridge, PA, the Very Rev. Dr. Peter Moore and the Diocese’s Director of Faith Formation, Peter Rothermel will lead a workshop on how we pass the faith to the next generation. “In today’s culture we can’t be ignorant of what we believe when others are highly articulate and militant about what they believe,” said Moore. Their workshop is “Confirmation, Catechism and the Formation Process.”
Dave Wright, a sought-after speaker on youth ministry who serves as the Diocese’s Coordinator of Youth Ministry, will look at ways smaller churches can build effective youth ministries in “Engaging Younger Generations in Smaller Congregations.”
Bishop Mark Lawrence, the XIV Bishop of South Carolina and the Rev. Dr. Canon Kendall Harmon, the Diocese’s Theologian-in-residence, will tag-team, “What is Anglicanism: Conversations on Affiliation,” which explores the distinctiveness of Anglicanism and looks at possible options for affiliation. This is of particular interest to the Diocese, which severed its ties to The Episcopal Church in 2012.
The workshops are being offered before the Diocese kicks off its 224th Annual Convention, which will begin that evening at the Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul in Charleston.
“The public is invited to join us at these pre-convention workshops which are aimed at strengthening the church,” said the Rev. Canon Jim Lewis, Canon to the Ordinary.
Online registration is available at www.dioceseofsc.org, under the “Convention” tab. There is no fee for the workshops, but participants are asked to pre-register to allow the organizers to arrange for materials.
