Renewing Biblical Anglicanism for a Global Future

Mere Anglicanism is all about witnessing to the God who, amidst all the ups and downs of church history, has called us -- whether as laity or clergy, whether as Episcopalians or members of some other Anglican entity, whether locally or globally -- to renew our witness to the One who gave us the Gospel and who across the centuries has providentially provided for the Anglican Way of faithfulness to that Gospel.
At a time when such faithfulness has been undermined from within and without The Episcopal Church, Mere Anglicanism is committed to the recovery and renewal of faithfulness to the Gospel within the Anglican Way. Our vision is none other than that of Bishop Mark Lawrence, currently Bishop of South Carolina: “Making Biblical Anglicans for a Global Age.” Such indeed is the compelling motivation for the upcoming sixth annual Mere Anglicanism conference in Charleston, South Carolina, January 20 – 22/23, 2011: Biblical Anglicanism for a Global Future. It is also what underlies the dedication of this conference to Bishop Christopher FitzSimons Allison, twelfth Bishop of South Carolina.
Surely no bishop in the Episcopal Church over the past half century has made a more salutary theological and pastoral contribution to Biblical Anglican Witness than Bishop Allison. At the age of 83 his lively witness is undiminished and Mere Anglicanism is privileged to host its 2011 Annual Conference in his honor.
Likewise, no bishop of the Church of England is more widely respected for his commitment to faithfulness in “believing, belonging, and behaving” as foundational to Biblical Anglicanism than the Rt. Rev. Michael Nazir-Ali, formerly General Secretary of the Church Missionary Society and currently Visiting Bishop to South Carolina; and no Primate of the Anglican Communion, in addressing its current disarray, is more esteemed for his own winsome yet stalwart witness than the Most Rev. Mouneer Anis, “President-Bishop” of Jerusalem and the Middle East.
These four bishops will be front and center at the sixth annual Mere Anglicanism conference to be hosted again this year by the Mother Parish of Anglicanism south of Virginia, St. Philip’s Church, Charleston, January 20 – 22/23. In affirmation of Bishop Lawrence’s vision of “Making Biblical Anglicans for a Global Age” the speakers at the conference, which is tailored to laity as well as clergy, will focus on a variety of ways of “Recovering the Power of the Word of God” as essential to the renewal of Biblical Anglicanism. By way of honoring Bishop Allison -- pastor, bishop, teacher, mentor, author and always preacher of the Word of God’s Grace -- conference speakers include Archbishop Anis, Bishop Nazir-Ali, and Bishop Lawrence, as well as Dr. Stephen Noll and Dr. William Dickson speaking on God’s Word Written; Dr. Ashley Null reporting on his recent research in the sacramental theology of Thomas Cranmer; Dr. Gillis Harp and Dr. Charles Raven offering critical reflections on biblical issues in Anglican history and theology; and, by way of ecumenical perspective, Lutheran pastors Dr. Steven Paulson and Dr. James Nestingen witnessing to the power of preaching the Gospel of Grace. The Rev. Jeffrey Miller and the Rev. Dr. Leander Harding will respectively open and close the conference preaching roster.
Lively fellowship, plenary panels, discussion of timely issues, and Prayer Book worship in the Spirit will round out the conference program, together with an optional buffet-banquet in honor of Bishop Allison on Friday, January 21.
