Epic, March 20-21 Epic is our spring high school retreat that combines quality Bible teaching, small group study, and contemplative reflection. This intentionally intimate retreat has been raising Biblically faithful students for over 10 years! Kurt Brewer, the local head of Cru (formerly Campus Crusade) will be our Bible teacher. Small group Bible studies are led by members of our Youth Commission. Worship music will be led by Benjamin and Heidi Birdsong. At 6 pm on June 15, 2015, God willing, Hunter Jordan will be ordained to the transitional diaconate at Trinity Church, Myrtle Beach. The Rt. Reverend Mark Lawrence will ordain Jordan, and the Rev. Iain Boyd, Rector of Trinity, will preach.
Clergy from across the Diocese are invited to participate in the procession. The Rev. Donnie MacDaniel, Mr Rod Sanders, Mrs Barbara Simmons, Mr Bill Ervin and Mr Joe Ervin will also participate in the service.
Hunter is originally from Florence, SC. He earned his BS in Business Management from Clemson University and will receive his MDiv from Nashotah House Theological Seminary. He was actively involved in Young Life for his four years of college, as well as spending his summers serving at Camp St. Christopher. Post college Hunter spent five years as the youth and family pastor at Trinity Church Myrtle Beach. After two years at Nashotah, Hunter is coming back to the Diocese to serve at St. Matthew's Church in Darlington, SC.
Hunter is married to Walker and they have two little girls, Tindall Claire (4) and Emma Ruth (2), and are adopting their son, Walter (1), from South Korea and hope to bring him home at the end of the summer.
Please join the Jordan family as they celebrate the ordination of Hunter this June 15th.

Prayers Requested for South Carolina Supreme Court Hearing, September 23, 2015
?On Wednesday, September 23rd, at 10:30 a.m., the Diocese of South Carolina will enter into oral arguments before the South Carolina Supreme Court. The Court has agreed to hear TEC’s appeal of the trial court ruling in our favor that was announced by Judge Goodstein on February 3rd of this year. In that order, Judge Goodstein ruled that the Diocese and its parishes:
• Are the owners of their real, personal and intellectual property.
• TEC has no legal, beneficial or equitable interest in any of those properties.
• TEC and its officers and agents were permanently enjoined from using our names or symbols.
• All the TEC counterclaims in the trial were dismissed with prejudice.
?
It is our prayerful hope that the state Supreme Court justices will uphold this decision in its entirety, preserving for our posterity both our right to freedom of religious association and the resources for ministry bequeathed to us by the faithful generations who have gone before us.? ?We have been abundantly blessed thus far by both the outcome of this litigation and the relative speed with which it has proceeded. Recognizing that divine favor which has overshadowed us from the beginning, I would commend to you once again the prayer that was prayed around the Diocese prior to the trial last summer. ??
Consider incorporating this prayer not only in your personal devotions but in your public worship in the coming weeks.
Gracious Lord, we pray that your will would be done through this trial. May we want what you desire. Speak your words alone through Alan Runyan and the other attorneys who represent us. May the courtroom be filled with the pleasant aroma of Christ, and at the end of the day, protect this Diocese and its parishes that we might bring the redemptive power of the biblical gospel to the South Carolina low country and beyond. Let not our fear of outcomes tarnish our joy or deter us from the mission you have given us. Teach us to bless and never curse those on the other side of this conflict. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. And make us victorious over-comers wherever this road leads. For we ask it all in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
It is by God’s grace we have come this far. It is his grace that will bring us home.

The Women’s Ministry Team of Christ-St. Paul’s, Yonges Island, has planned a wonderful event for the weekend of September 25 and 26. The weekend begins on Friday evening, September 25 at 6:30 p.m. with food and fellowship followed by a time of worship and teaching from the two speakers, Becky Prado and Dr. Sandra Braham. They will dismiss at 9:30 p.m. Then, on Saturday September 26, they'll begin at 8:30 a.m. with breakfast and continue with more worship and teaching.
Becky will be leading the conference with both music and teaching, bringing meaning to God’s word and hearing His voice.
Sandra Braham, our guest speaker, will be focusing on women’s economic empowerment and eliminating racism. Sandra’s service to her community and humanity in general spans many years. She gives all the credit to God who she says has guided her path throughout her life.

Martha Horn’s ordination to the priesthood, which was scheduled for October 3 has been rescheduled for Saturday, October 10 at 2 p.m. at St. Luke’s, Hilton Head. On Saturday, October 10, at 2 p.m. at St. Luke’s Church in Hilton Head, the Rev. Martha Horn will be ordained to the priesthood. The Rt. Rev. Mark Lawrence will officiate, celebrate and preach. All are encouraged to join in this joyful celebration.

NOTE DATE CHANGE: The FBI will hold a situational awareness symposium to train people in houses of worship how to respond to emergencies such as a potential shooter. The Charleston event will be held on Monday, October 12 from 7 - 9 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul on 126 Coming Street.
The Columbia field office of the FBI has been holding symposiums across the state since the June 17 mass shooting at Emanuel AME Church. Nine worshippers died in the attack during a Bible study.
The FBI encourages all clergy and lay leaders from Charleston and surrounding communities to attend. Agents will share the latest information and lessons from past situations in an effort to help mitigate potential emergencies, according to a media release.
Topics include identifying an active shooter and pre-incident behavioral indicators; dealing with national news; supporting victims, families and officers involved; crisis management; and the use of explosive devices by active shooters.

Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of the South
Archbishop Beach's passion is to share the Word of God in such a way as to help others discover the incredible living Jesus. Beach served as the Rector and Pastor of Holy Cross Anglican Church in Loganville, GA, from its founding in February 2004, until December, 2013. On October 9, 2010, he was consecrated in Atlanta, Georgia as the first Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of the South in the Anglican Church in North America. Beach is a graduate of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, the School of Theology at the University of the South, and Georgia State University. Married for more than 30 years, he and his wife, Allison, have two grown children and make their home in the Metro-Atlanta area.

St. Matthew's Parish will mark its 250th anniversary with two separate services.
On Sunday, November 8, at 10:30 a.m. they will hold a service of baptism and confirmation with the Rt. Rev. Alden Hathaway presiding.
On Sunday, December 6, at 10:30 a.m. the Rt. Rev. C. FitzSimons Allision, retired bishop of the Diocese and church historian ,will speak at the recommissioning of the church and dedication of an historical marker. A covered dish lunch will follow the service.
St. Matthew’s Parish was established 1765-1768 by enactments of the South Carolina Colonial Assembly. The parish described in the original acts stretched from the Santee and Congaree Rivers to the Edisto. The acts authorized construction of a parish church, parsonage and chapel in Amelia Township near the Santee River and the construction of a chapel in Orangeburgh Township near the Edisto River. The parish church relocated twice before being rebuilt in 1852-1853 on its present site in Fort Motte. The Santee chapel was used until 1836. The Orangeburgh chapel was used only about 10 years, from 1767-1777. In 1830, another chapel was built in the village of Totness, now the Old Belleville Road community of Calhoun County, which was used until at least 1865. Around 1850, St. Matthew’s Parish organized a mission church in the town of Orangeburg under the name Church of the Redeemer. The Orangeburg church outgrew the “Mother Church” and for many years, the priests serving Church of the Redeemer also ministered at St. Matthew’s Parish.
The church has been served by the Rev. Janet Roberts Echols since 2013, when she and her family returned to the United States from missionary work in India. As part of its “Witness 250” celebration, the church plans to send 250 Bibles to church planters in India.
The community is invited to attend the November 1, 2015 worship service, barbeque lunch and historical marker dedication.

On Wednesday, November 4 at 6:30 p.m., St. Michael’s Church in Charleston will have an “Evensong for the Persecuted Church.” The retired Syrian Archbishop John Meno will be addressing the crowd about the persecution of the Egyptian people, and all the Christians in the East. The service will be followed by a reception, with a question and answer session for the Bishop. The persecution of Christians in the Middle East has dramatically escalated in the past few years. Already a volatile place for religious minorities, the Arab Spring was a catalyst for exponentially increasing the massacring of Orthodox Christians. Many of these Christians have been overlooked by the West in times past. Yet their councils and their traditions are the most ancient in the world, some dating to the times of the apostles themselves. In Egypt, the ouster of Mubarak, initially a hopeful invitation for change, culminated into the practical elimination of all remaining Coptic Orthodox Christians. The press has recently been saturated with the news that the radical Islamist group ISIS has completely eradicated the presence of all Christian groups left in Iraq, and most in Syria. Beheadings, crucifixions, forced conversions, and beatings have become common place. This “Evensong for the Persecuted Church” intends to raise awareness about these issues, as well as take up an offering to provide aid and relief to the refugees and suffering in these areas. The choir, which will include not only St. Michael’s choir, but singers from various churches in the area, will sing Anglican chant, anthems, and hymns as well as Orthodox music.

re:generate is an amazing opportunity for high school students to grow in their faith! On this weekend, youth groups come together to hear a dynamic message, engage in lively worship, and enjoy time building relationships with one another.
The Rev. Rob Sturdy will be our speaker at re:generate. Rob is an Associate Pastor at St. Andrew’s Mount Pleasant, the director of The Ridley Institute, and previously served as Rector of Trinity Church in Myrtle Beach. Rob is a powerful communicator who brings theological depth and biblical insight with great passion and clarity. We are thrilled to have him back as a speaker at this event!
